Kelly is a registered Patent Agent with both the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He specializes in software patents, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, fintech, and advanced large language models (LLMs).
With over a decade of experience, Kelly has successfully drafted and prosecuted patent applications across Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia. His background in electrical engineering enables him to quickly understand complex technologies and craft strategically focused patent filings that align with clients’ commercial goals. He also advises on industrial design protection and broader IP strategy.
Kelly works with clients across sectors including AI, medical imaging, e-commerce, and energy systems. While his primary focus is on software and data-driven innovation, he actively tracks developments in quantum computing as a key area of future patent growth.
Kelly is also actively engaged in the advancement of the patent profession. He currently serves on both the Patent Knowledge Examination Item Development Advisory Group and the Patent Agent Skills Exam Advisory Group. He is a former Chair of the Toronto Intellectual Property Group and serves on the Information, Communication & Technology Committee of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. He is also an active member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
Outside of the office, Kelly enjoys playing hockey, golf and squash.
